With the help of Te Puni Kokiri, Tarai Waka have organised a circumnavigation of Te Ika a Maui (the North Island) for the summer of 2008-2009. The voyage will see Te Aurere leave from its base in Mangonui and travel around the motu calling in at various marae along the way to deliver wananga to the community, the voyage will end with the arrival of Te Aurere at Waitangi for the Waitangi day celebrations in February 2009.
Aims of the Voyage
To promote the awareness and traditions of kaupapa waka to all age groups and cultures
Deliver a general overview on various areas of kaupapa waka including; a history of voyaging waka in Polynesia, traditional navigation, traditional sailing techniques and waka construction
To provide practical learning experiences
To recruit, train and develop new crew members for future voyages
